Black Tree Studio Pottery
As a craftsman and fine artist, my pottery embodies the following issues: the beauty of natural materials; nature’s sculptural shapes; the transformative power of fire, light, and time; and the “stories” of unearthed artifacts from ancient cultures. My pottery is functional yet sculptural. I create both single one-of-a-kind pieces as well as series which explore variations of forms. I employ a combination of hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Porcelain inlays, stoneware, and marbled clay are my preferred materials. I glaze minimally and intentionally to highlight the texture and color of these clays. I combine technical proficiency, intuition and improvisation to determine a pot’s shape and texture as well as to anticipate how the clay’s natural color and texture will transform through reduction high firing.
