Suzanne Crane Fine Stoneware

My most recent work combines wheel throwing and sculpture in stoneware to create vessels and bowls that fuse the aesthetics of smooth Danish Modern design and the apparent spontaneity of Japanese Sumi-e ink brush paintings of birds. The birds are visitors to the pieces–migrants just stopping for a rest.   I am also interested in opening a dialogue about native/non-native, invasive/naturalized, weed/flower in regard to how we talk about our gardens vs how we talk about our citizens and immigrants.  My simplest pieces invite such discussion by using invasive, toxic, weed species in beautiful ways.  I use Celadon and temmoku glazes with iron oxide wash, and fire to cone 7 oxidations.
