Branching Out Wood Art
My lathe-turned vessels are made using unusual exotic burls or reclaimed, near-extinct woods. I incorporate classical shapes, inlays, tints, hand-tooled sculptural designs, the natural inclusions and formations of the wood into my artwork. I combine my singular woodworking with a lifelong passion for collecting unusual and fascinating organic elements: semi-precious minerals, fossils and various other finds from nature. Coupling these seemingly different influences allows me to capture the unpredictable nature of wood in one-of-a-kind vessels. The finishes are of a high gloss lacquer typically used on musical instruments which increases the awareness of the beauty of the grain in the wood.
