Research is hope, and at the NorthShore University HealthSystem Research Institute breast and ovarian cancer research are priorities.

A focus on translational research—bringing laboratory findings to the bedside—means patients have more choices and brighter futures today and tomorrow. Findings from laboratory and clinical studies at NorthShore University HealthSystem are adapted into immediate benefits in patient care. NorthShore Research Institute now ranks ninth among multi-specialty independent research hospitals in the country in terms of National Institutes of Health awards.

More than 100 researchers are engaged in breast and ovarian cancer studies at NorthShore encompassing an array of multi-disciplinary programs addressing better methods for prevention, detection and treatment.

The Auxiliary and the entire American Craft Exposition committee are proud to play a real role in the battle against breast and ovarian cancer by supporting essential research.

Ovarian cancer is called the “silent” killer because symptoms are easy to dismiss and the disease is often diagnosed too late for effective treatment. Funds raised at the 2013 American Craft Exposition (ACE) supported pioneering research being conducted at NorthShore that is already showing promising results in preventing ovarian cancer in at-risk women.

One in eight women will develop breast cancer and experts predict another 212,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed this year. Ovarian cancer, the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths in women, is particularly daunting in that its often silent symptoms make earlier diagnosis difficult.
