Leah Evans Textile Work

This selection of fiber work is inspired by maps, satellite imagery, and aerial photography. Themes address land and water use with an environmental history approach. Processes feature a balance of machine and hand stitching. By incorporating discarded kimonos, upholstery remnants, and many other secondhand materials, the works are in keep with the quilt tradition of recycling. Techniques include natural and synthetic dyeing, applique, reverse applique, piecing, and a variety of hand embroidery stitches. All design, machine work, and hand work are done by the artist without the aid of a computer or programmable sewing machine.
